A reminder that on Tuesday, April 23rd, the Grade 6 students and staff will be playing a game of floorball. All students are encouraged to bring in a donation in support of Chalice, as part of our Lenten project. Also, some of our Grade 4 students have started a social justice project and are asking our school community to help others in need by bringing in used hockey equipment on the day of the floorball game. The used equipment will be donated to the Jumpstart program, which helps to give disadvantaged youth opportunities to get started in sports.

St. Michael Corkery School will celebrate Pink Shirt Day on Friday, March 1st. All students and staff are encouraged to wear a pink shirt to show that we all stand up to bullying. Today is the national pink shirt day, but Mr. Skinner is at the Board office for meetings, so we will celebrate as a school on Friday, so he can wear his pink shirt with the staff and students too.

Celebrate Africa Performance and Black History Month Events

posted Feb 19, 2019, 7:19 AM by St. Michael ‎(Corkery)‎ School

We are very proud to have a beautiful display that greets parents and students when they enter the school, which celebrates that February is Black History Month. Students will also have the opportunity to learn more about Black History Month and some of the amazing contributions made to Canadian and American society by people from many different backgrounds, during presentations in the library on Wednesday, February 27th. We were also extremely fortunate to have Masabo and Fana Soro visit our school on Monday, February 4th for their "Celebrate Africa!" performance. Through, songs, music, dance and stories, they taught the students and teachers about "the Africa they know." They were very energetic and positive and got the students on their feet and involved in the performance. Their message was that the students should "have fun", "have a good heart because that is what matters" and of course, to "listen to their teachers." We learned stories about sharing and warrior dances and we learned a lot more about Africa, thanks to the performance. "It was great. I had a lot of fun and I learned a lot," said one of our Grade 3 students who was called onto the stage. With all the dancing and smiles in the hallways and on the yard, it was clear that the students would love to have these performers visit again.
