Celebrate Africa Performance and Black History Month Events

posted Feb 19, 2019, 7:19 AM by St. Michael ‎(Corkery)‎ School

We are very proud to have a beautiful display that greets parents and students when they enter the school, which celebrates that February is Black History Month. Students will also have the opportunity to learn more about Black History Month and some of the amazing contributions made to Canadian and American society by people from many different backgrounds, during presentations in the library on Wednesday, February 27th. We were also extremely fortunate to have Masabo and Fana Soro visit our school on Monday, February 4th for their "Celebrate Africa!" performance. Through, songs, music, dance and stories, they taught the students and teachers about "the Africa they know." They were very energetic and positive and got the students on their feet and involved in the performance. Their message was that the students should "have fun", "have a good heart because that is what matters" and of course, to "listen to their teachers." We learned stories about sharing and warrior dances and we learned a lot more about Africa, thanks to the performance. "It was great. I had a lot of fun and I learned a lot," said one of our Grade 3 students who was called onto the stage. With all the dancing and smiles in the hallways and on the yard, it was clear that the students would love to have these performers visit again.
